C's grandma lived in Mississippi - back deep into the woods until the town crept closer and grandpa had to sell the trees one at a time to pay the bills. Everything was perpetually wet from precipitation, humidity, or sweat. Sometimes at simultaneously.
The roaches moved into the walls and baseboards. Made the crawlspaces their highway. So Grandma M. washed the dishes careful like. She let them airdry on the counter after a scalding soap and then water rinse in the plastic bins left over from hospital visits. Then, she'd take a roll of paper towels and wipe them again before putting them in the drawers.
If you reached into the cupboard for a glass or a spoon, she'd take it from you and rewash it. Same way. Ain't none of her folks gonna eat from dirty stuff. She might not have silver spoons, but whatever we had was gonna be clean.
I think about that a lot. Try to keep my Amazon flatware clean and covered. I haven't had to burn down the house for roaches, but called Bugs Burney for the spiders a time or two. Grandma M loved us hard and clean, honored us with the best she had and better than she could afford. I think about that a lot.
