Truncated Vocabulary Discussion: SBOE

Below, you will find the vocabulary discussion from today's SBOE meeting. Dr. Trejo had prepared a report with research and details. The board was not ready for the presentation since the Vocabulary list must come after the Literary List is completed. She has done considerable preparation in order to meet the requirements of HB1605 and the commissioner's charges. I look forward to seeing what she has compiled - it looks promising.

There may be opportunities for collaboration and input.

Note: Spoken speech is not the same as written discourse. I have edited the transcript, but have left the diction as it was spoken.

We are still in that place at this time, so we are bringing this back for discussion. And just as a reminder, at the previous meeting we talked a little bit about what could be a potential process for selecting words, as you recall, I'm sure there was a suggestion that there be academic terms included, in addition to terms tied to literary works. There needed to be research around the appropriate number of words per grade level, and that these selected words should be grade appropriate and tied to other TEKS, and that a recommended agency list could be generated to provide you something to work from, per statute HB 1605 So we are just bringing the slide in back for discussion to see if you have any additional input you'd like to give us, and then we will consider bringing you the agency recommendations for first reading in the next meeting, and there we go. If you have any questions, I'm happy to answer.

Dr. Trejo, so if I'm interpreting what you're saying correctly, you think it's wise for us to wait until we approve the lit list, and then you would work with academic professionals to come up with appropriate ways to come up with the list. Yes, and that will include campus-based professionals. point

Member Pickren  02:03

Point of information,

Member Pickren  02:06

Mr. Chairman.

Member Pickren  02:09

Do we have any members online right now? Thank you.

Chair Kinsey  02:17

Do you have a question?

Member Childs  02:21

Sure, I was just going to piggyback off what Member Reveles asked, and say, what would be the process in you guys choosing the academic professionals that will help create the list?

Dr. Trejo  02:33

I don't know that I have a process to offer up at this point. In following the statute, there's a requirement for the agency to offer a recommended list in that would be considered by this board, so I'm bringing it back for discussion to hear from you, any commentary around the vocabulary item,

Member Childs  03:01

Could we possibly hold some sort of application process similar to how we choose work groups, where they're representative of the districts, and they send in applications, and they're vetted by us? I know it would have to probably be much faster, but could we do something like that?

Dr. Trejo  03:21

Happy to talk with you about your suggestions. I do think timing is of the essence to prepare. So it's something I think we would need to think about under time constraints.

Chair Kinsey  04:00

Okay, the time right now is 505 I'll take a five minute break. Can you stay in the rooms getting things organized, so I can describe where we are?
